The history of the church in Bukiškis is linked to the Bozheryanov family, years of neglect and the people who brought it back to life.

  1. 1866

    The Bukiškis estate

    Praskovya Nikolaevna Bozheryanova buys the Bukiškis estate, later recognised as the family estate.

  2. Second half of the 19th century

    Building the church

    The church is built on the initiative of General Alexander Mikhailovich Bozheryanov and consecrated in honour of the Protection of the Mother of God. The exact date of construction still needs archival confirmation.

  3. 20th century

    Years of neglect

    After the revolution the church was closed and the family crypt desecrated; in Soviet times the building was used as a warehouse.

  4. 2002

    Restoration

    Restoration work on the church began.

  5. 2011

    Services resume

    Liturgical life resumed in the summer.
